About the blog // Contact

Sewing and Slapdashery is primarily the personal learning record of a beginner, and that's what it will always be (unless I keep going for 20 years and it becomes the personal learning record of an intermediate). I started this blog in 2015, less than two months after I made my first skirt. I'm a writer first and foremost and I never quite know how to deal with anything if I'm not writing it down.

I'm not about perfection. I put off learning to sew for years because I thought you had to be terribly meticulous and precise and tidy, and I am none of those things (hence the blog name). Almost everything I make is for me, so if I can live with a particular imperfection, then it's fine. As I've got better I've got pickier, without question, but I will always be a member of Team Fuck It That'll Do, and I would rather try new things than repeat the same thing over and over again until it's faultless. This is why I made my first coat after eighteen months but still have scratty hems on half my dresses.

The fact that anyone reads this blog is amazing to me, and I try to repay that by writing reviews that are as honest as I can make them (excepting a few of my old entries where I'm clearly in denial about how terrible something is). Finding honest pattern reviews isn't as easy as I would like it to be - that's the problem with a small community like this where there isn't really any separation between business and customer - so I want to do my bit.

A few things about me:

I live in London with my boyfriend Patrick. We've been together about eight years, and he still thinks my jokes are funny.

I was diagnosed with ADHD in January 2021 and WOW does everything make a lot more sense now. I am the only person I know who's managed to lose the same printer twice.

My sewing machine is a Janome DC3050 named The Gnome. After several years of struggling with one of the Lidl overlockers I recently acquired a Janome 9200D, which actually works. I have named it The Nyoom, because I'm a dork.

My other obsessions include blues music, raw fish, photography, wine, burlesque, terrible puns, Olympic weightlifting, the 1920s, Carly Rae Jepsen, making lists, and things that are way smaller or larger than they're supposed to be. Also if I see a dog, I will stop dead and say "Dog" repeatedly until I can't see the dog anymore.
